Why Jewelry by Design?

Your Jewelry Stays Here.

One question we get most is:

“My other jeweler said it can’t be done. They have to send it off, and they aren’t sure it can be repaired. Can you help?”

With the exception of certain specialized watch repairs, your jewelers at JBD can help about 10 feet away. We’re proud to have a full service design and repair studio in-store, where our jewelers work every day.

That means the same team that receives your jewelry is responsible for documenting it, evaluating it, repairing it, inspecting it, and returning it to you.

For something as personal as jewelry, that matters. Your jewelry stays local. You know where it is, who is caring for it, and who to speak with along the way.

What Happens When You Leave Jewelry With Us?

1. We Document Your Jewelry

When your piece is accepted for service, our team records the jewelry, the requested work, relevant customer information, and its condition at intake.

Your jewelry is also photographed as part of our intake process. Diamonds and gemstones over 0.25 carat are photographed under magnification so we can document identifying clarity characteristics and other visible features.

This level of documentation has been part of the Jewelry by Design standard since we opened our doors in 1995.

Owner Mark Nelson has long invested in technology that helps improve transparency and communication in the jewelry industry. Over the years, Jewelry by Design has worked with regional companies to develop and adopt technology for scanning, analyzing, and photographing diamonds and gemstones.

More than 30 years later, that same philosophy continues to guide our intake process today.

We believe you should always be informed about your jewelry.

2. It Enters Our In-House Shop

Your service job is logged and transferred to our shop, where repairs are organized and scheduled based on the work required and expected completion date.

We pride ourselves on 3-5 business day turnaround time on most repairs. As our repair business has grown, we’ve continued refining our processes and expanding the capabilities of our shop so we can provide efficient service without compromising the quality of the work.

3. A Jeweler Evaluates the Piece

Sometimes the problem is exactly what it appears to be. We’re proud to invest in our staff. Most that you work with have been through GIA and Jewelers of America certifications. With that said, sometimes our jewelers discover additional wear that isn't immediately visible from the top of the piece.

If the repair needs to change from what was originally discussed, we'll communicate with you before proceeding when appropriate. We never want to make decisions about your jewelry without your permission.

4. The Repair Is Completed

Your jewelry is worked on inside our Auburn shop using the method appropriate for the piece, its materials, construction, condition, and required repair.

5. We Inspect It Before It Leaves

Once complete, the jewelry is checked before returning to the sales floor and being prepared for customer pickup.

Then we'll let you know it's ready to come home.

Can This Be Fixed?

Often, yes.
We built our reputation on saying yes.

A ring may have a shank worn too thin for another simple sizing. A prong may be too compromised to retip safely. A chain may have several areas weakened by years of wear. Our jewelers evaluate the condition of the entire piece rather than simply addressing the most obvious symptom.

Sometimes that means recommending a more extensive repair today to avoid a much bigger problem tomorrow. Occasionally, the responsible recommendation may be restoration, redesign, or replacement rather than repeatedly repairing a structure that can no longer safely support the jewelry.

We'd rather explain your options than perform a repair that isn’t satisfactory.

FAQ

Is All Jewelry Repair Performed In Store?

Yes! With the exception of certain specialized watch repairs, all jewelry repair is completed in-house at our brick and mortar store. Our three in-store jewelers have more than 65 years of combined experience caring for everything from everyday favorites to treasured heirlooms. Your jewelry stays local with the same team that receives, evaluates, repairs, and inspects it.

Do I Need an Appointment for Jewelry Repair?

No appointment is needed for most jewelry repair inquiries. You’re welcome to stop by during regular business hours so our team can inspect your piece and discuss your options. If you prefer to plan ahead, you can book an appointment through our website.

Do You Provide Free Estimates?

Yes. Every repair, custom design, and jewelry consultation includes a complimentary, no-obligation estimate. Because every piece is different, an accurate estimate requires an in-person inspection.

Can You Resize My Ring?

In most cases, yes. We can resize many engagement rings, wedding bands, family rings, and other fine jewelry. Whether a ring can be safely resized depends on its metal, design, stones, construction, and current condition. Our staff will inspect your ring and explain the best options before any work begins.

Can You Replace a Missing Gemstone or Diamond?

Yes. Our jewelers can replace missing diamonds and many other gemstones. We will help evaluate the piece, discuss suitable replacement options, and ensure the new stone is properly and securely set.

Can You Repair Vintage or Heirloom Jewelry?

Yes. We love helping customers preserve meaningful antique and inherited jewelry. Depending on the condition of the piece, we may recommend repair, restoration, stone resetting, redesign, or creating a replica for everyday wear. Our goal is to preserve its sentimental value while making it safe and enjoyable to wear.

How Do You Document My Diamond?

Transparency is our number-one priority. Diamonds and gemstones weighing 0.25 carat or more are photographed under magnification during our intake process. This technology and documentation procedure was pioneered at Jewelry by Design by owner and Master Jeweler Mark Nelson.

We review visible identifying characteristics and document the condition of your jewelry before it enters our repair studio, giving you clarity and confidence throughout the process.

Can You Repair Jewelry Another Jeweler Said Could Not Be Fixed?

More often than not, yes. We have helped many customers who were previously told that a repair was impossible or that their jewelry could not be restored. Because we have three jewelers and a full-service design and manufacturing studio in-house, we can often explore solutions that may not be available elsewhere.

Every piece is different, so our jewelers will inspect your jewelry and give you an honest assessment of what can be done safely.

Will You Contact Me If Anything Changes?

Of course. No decisions about your jewelry are made without your explicit permission. If our jewelers discover additional wear or damage that changes the recommended work, price, or timeline, we will discuss the options with you before proceeding.

Do You Repair Watches?

Yes. Watch repair is the one service we do not specialize in-house. For more than 30 years, we have worked with a trusted watch-repair expert who services watches at many levels, from everyday timepieces to luxury brands such as Rolex and Patek Philippe.

We can also assist with services such as watch-battery replacement, band adjustments, and strap repairs. Bring your watch to us, and we’ll help determine the appropriate next step. Most watch services are performed while you wait.

Do You Repair Jewelry Not Bought at Jewelry by Design?

Yes. Your jewelry does not need to have been purchased from Jewelry by Design for us to repair it. We welcome jewelry from other stores, family collections, estate purchases, and inherited pieces.

We’ll also clean and inspect your jewelry free of charge. Bring it in, and our team will help you understand its condition and any recommended repairs.
